The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
